What Adam is Reading 4-12-21

Around 3 pm on Sunday, I began to wonder if I own my home or my home owns me. A weekend full of fixing, organizing, and improving house things illuminates this hidden hierarchy of precisely which of us is serving the other. Of course, the house may see us as helpful symbionts, depending on how it feels about our decorating.

The CDC's COVID tracker weekly review deployed a variant classification system describing strains by their degree of interest, concern, and consequence. We are still seeing rising cases, and the rate of hospitalization continues to increase as well. I continue to hope the increasing numbers of vaccinated people will blunt this wave.

Here is data on the relationship between the pandemic and various interventions within the Blackfeet Indian Tribe. Check out Figures 1 and 2 at the bottom.

This real-world, but not yet peer-reviewed, Israeli data is an excellent example of why variant conversations are challenging.
-A higher than expected number of vaccinated adults became sick with the South African (B.1.351) strain in a small sample size.
-While we know antibodies from vaccinated people are less effective at neutralizing some variants in a test tube, what this clinically means in real people is not clear.
-Since multiple strains are competing for the same hosts, the B.1.1.7 variant (more contagious but less harmful) may be blocking B.1.351 spread.

Though the AZ vaccine is not available in the U.S., Dr. Rajkumar does a great job of walking through the data on the infrequent clotting complications.

Infographic of the day: Ignorance to enlightenment
When the 14-year-old has set the table with the fork tines facing the chair, you may begin to wonder if you have failed as a parent. Fortunately, you also pay for their phone and internet. And thanks to Martins Potato Rolls, they can educate themselves on setting the table for any meal.

*note there is no meal in which the fork tines face the eater.

---Bonus Round -- Soviet movies and TV

Over the weekend, I found some articles on the internet's collective rediscovery of the 1991 Soviet adaptation of The Lord of the Rings

This pairs nicely with the 1985 Soviet TV version of The Hobbit

Of course, the entire body of Soviet-era movies and TV is now a thing I want to explore.

Technical differences aside, I think the notion of watching stories with a completely different set of cultural assumptions around patriotism, the purpose of conflict, and the enemy (such as Americans) is fascinating.

Clean hands and sharp minds,

Adam
